By Jose Fernandez , Ed Barker , Hank Jacobs Introduction In November 2022, we introduced a brand new tier — Basic with ads. This tier extended existing infrastructure by adding new backend components and a new remote call to our ads partner on the playback path. As we were gearing up for launch, we wanted to ensure it would go as smoothly as possible.
Most SRE teams eventually reach a point in their existence where they appear unable to meet all the demands placed upon them. This is when these teams may need to scale. However, it’s important to understand that increasing team capacity is not the same as increasing the number of people on the team. Let’s unpack what scaling a team is all about, what are the indicators, what are steps you can take, and how you know if you’re done.
Keeping pace with modern digital transformation requires ensuring that applications are responsive, resilient, and always available amid increased complexity. As a result, site reliability has emerged as a critical success metric for many organizations. Site reliability engineering (SRE) has recently become a critical discipline in recent years as the world has shifted in favor of web-based interactions.
Disaster recovery is not optional for businesses operating in the digital age. With the ever-increasing reliance on data, system outages or data loss can be catastrophic, causing significant business disruptions and financial losses. With multi-cloud or multi-regional PostgreSQL deployments, the complexity of managing disaster recovery only amplifies.
What I learned at GlueCon 2023 — Tipping Points and Generative AI The final slide of my GlueCon keynote featuring a sunset over a pool in Maui — picture by Adrian I’ve presented at GlueCon many times over the last decade or so. It’s an unusual event, held at the end of May at an isolated hotel between Denver and Boulder Colorado, the agenda is curated by Eric Norlin, and the 2-day event is run by his wife Kimberley.

Uber runs more than 100K big data workloads per day using Apache Spark–at that scale it’s crucial to write optimized apps. The Delivery Data Solutions team built Spark Analysers, a real-time system to catch anti-patterns in the Spark application at Uber scale, helping Uber developers optimize their apps.
As the number of APIs that need to be integrated increases, managing the complexity of API interactions becomes increasingly challenging. By using the API gateway , we can create a sequence of API calls, which breaks down the API workflows into smaller, more manageable steps. For example, in an online shopping website when a customer searches for a product, the platform can send a request to the product search API, then send a request to the product details API to retrieve more information about
“Move fast and break things.” How many times have you heard that? Know what? No one likes that. No one likes breaking things. It’s more like: “Move fast and break things— only because you don’t know how to avoid it. ” Granted, as a soundbite, that is nowhere near as catchy. But progressive delivery is essentially the solution to that problem: it enables you to move fast and avoid breaking things.
Hello friends, on certain occasions, some clients, for whatever reason, ask us to migrate a supposedly “equivalent” brand of an engine in terms of belonging to the MySQL family or ecosystem. In this case, we will be analyzing the migration of MariaDB to Percona Server for MySQL 8 in particular. A comment worth clarifying is that, although Percona Server for MySQL is a drop-in replacement for MySQL since it offers compatibility continuity (Percona Server for MySQL even offers certain
Percona has started to participate in Data on Kubernetes (DoK) meetings about Kubernetes Operators. These meetings are an initiative of DoK meetups that spotlight DoK case studies. In this blog post series, I will summarize the topics covered in each meeting. On May 23, very interesting topics were discussed on the agenda. Let’s begin to summarize it.
There has been a lot of chatter about eBPF in cloud-native communities over the last 2 years. eBPF was a mainstay at KubeCon, eBPF days and eBPF summits are rapidly growing in popularity, companies like Google and Netflix have been using eBPF for years, and new use cases are emerging all the time. Especially in observability, eBPF is expected to be a game changer.
In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, ensuring high-quality software is crucial for organizations to thrive. Service level objectives (SLOs) provide a powerful framework for measuring and maintaining software performance, reliability, and user satisfaction. Certain SLOs can help organizations get started on measuring and delivering metrics that matter.

In the current trend, app development is essential for business owners and e-commerce. Of course, as a developer, you have to prefer the best framework to develop apps faster. Coding is necessary when it comes to every app development. But at the same time, some developers lack skill development. As a result, no code platform is quickly revolutionizing the app development industry.
White box testing is a software testing method in which the internal structure and implementation of the software being tested are known and used as the basis for designing the test cases. It involves testing the software at the code level and requires a deep understanding of the code and the design of the software. It is also known as glass box, transparent box, clear box, or structural testing.

The ultimate state for any team is self-determination: they lead their own discovery of work, self-prioritize that work, self-organize their roles and self-direct the delivery. Self-determination requires meta awareness. The team knows the problem space - the motivations of different actors (buyers, users, influencers), the guiding policies (regulatory and commercial preference), the tech in place, and so forth.
Site reliability engineering (SRE) is a critical discipline that focuses on ensuring modern systems and applications' continuous availability and performance. One of the most vital aspects of SRE is incident response, a structured process for identifying, assessing, and resolving system incidents that can lead to downtime, revenue loss, and brand reputation damage.
Introduction Memory systems are evolving into heterogeneous and composable architectures. Heterogeneous and Composable Memory (HCM) offers a feasible solution for terabyte- or petabyte-scale systems, addressing the performance and efficiency demands of emerging big-data applications. However, building and utilizing HCM presents challenges, including interconnecting various memory technologies (e.g., using Compute Express Link or CXL), organizing memory components for optimal performance, adaptin
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a subfield of computer science that focuses on building smart machines that can carry out tasks.
When it comes to website development, WordPress has been the number one choice among developers and programmers worldwide. And why not? WordPress offers a wide range of benefits to developers and businesses. It is an open-source platform that allows developers to build high-quality, uncluttered, end-to-end, and dynamic websites and web applications.
The console.log function — the poor man’s debugger — is every JavaScript developer’s best friend. We use it to verify that a certain piece of code was executed or to check the state of the application at a given point in time. We may also use console.warn to send warning messages or console.error to explain what happened when things have gone wrong.
I’m helping out a client who has really solid Core Web Vitals. Their Time to First Byte, First Contentful Paint and Largest Contentful Paint are all overwhelmingly in the green. Their Cumulative Layout Shift and Interaction to Next Paint have a little room for improvement, but even those are really solid. All the usual suspects look great. Looking at the metrics alone, you would think their performance was rock-solid and there wasn’t much to do.

Melissa Logan, managing director of Data on Kubernetes (DoK), led one of the best panels I’ve been to at a conference at Kubecon EU in Amsterdam about challenges with and the state of the art of running databases on Kubernetes. This panel united the Data on Kubernetes Community Operator SIG and Kubernetes Storage SIG to discuss key features of Kubernetes database operators.
For today’s software organizations security has never been more top of mind. On one side, there is the present and growing threat of being hacked by malicious actors, set out in Crowdstrike’s recent Global threat report. And on the other, there is a wave of cybersecurity regulation from the government to mitigate such cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Software organizations feel the heat from both sides as they work to improve their security posture in ways that will also achieve audit and complian
