In part 1 of this series, I tried out a few ways to compress a 1TB table. While I got decent results in my first attempt, I wanted to see if I could improve the performance in part 2. There I outlined a few of the things I thought might be performance issues, and laid out how I would better partition the destination table for optimal columnstore compression.

One of the biggest challenges operations groups will face over the coming year will be learning how to support AI- and ML-based applications. On one hand, ops groups are in a good position to do this; they’re already heavily invested in testing, monitoring, version control, reproducibility, and automation. On the other hand, they will have to learn a lot about how AI applications work and what’s needed to support them.
Cloudburst: stateful functions-as-a-service , Sreekanti et al., arXiv 2020. Today’s paper choice is a fresh-from-the-arXivs take on serverless computing from the RISELab at Berkeley, addressing some of the limitations outlined in last year’s ‘ Berkeley view on serverless computing.’ Stateless is fine until you need state, at which point the coarse-grained solutions offered by current platforms limit the kinds of application designs that work well.
While some organizations think it is up to the user to protect themselves by choosing strong usernames and passwords, the developer can help influence good password choices by including it in the design of the application. For example, the developer could include bars, percentages, or colors to help dictate quality of a password as the user enters it into a form.

Conversely after moving to a developer role, getting access to real external client workloads to get a perf recording directly is rare. To bridge this gap, I hope to encourage a bit of perf usage to help DBAs report bugs/feature requests in more detail to MySQL developers, who can then serve your needs better.
