Some time ago I participated in design of a backend for one large online retailer company. From the business logic point of view, this was a pretty typical eCommerce service for hierarchical and faceted navigation, although not without peculiarities, but high performance requirements led us to the quite advanced architecture and technical design. In particular, we built this system on top of Oracle Coherence and designed our own data structures and indexes.

A little while back, I mentioned I was doing some research for the book about how images are downloaded when media queries are involved. To help with that, I wrote up some automated tests where Javascript could determine whether or not the image was requested and the results could be collected by Browserscope for review. I posted some initial findings, but I think I’ve got enough data now to be able to go into a bit more detail.

At GoingNative in February , I emphasized the need for more modern and portable C++ libraries, including for things like RESTful web/cloud services, HTTP, JSON, and more. The goal is to find or develop modern C++ libraries that leverage C++11 features, and then submit the best for standardization. Microsoft wants to do its part, and here’s a step in that direction.

A big software development project collapses just weeks before it is expected to be released to QA. According to the project leadership team, they're dogged by integration problems and as a result, the software is nowhere close to being done. It's going to take far more time and far more money than expected, but until these integration problems get sorted out, it isn't clear how much more time and how much more money.

I’m seeing many younger programmers picking up C++. The average age at C++ events over the past year has been declining rapidly as the audience sizes grow with more and younger people in addition to the C++ veterans. But this one just beats all [Facebook link added]: A six-year-old child from Bangladesh is hoping to be officially recognised as the world’s youngest computer programmer.

I’m not saying it should be boycotted, only that I avoid it. Here’s what I wrote two years ago: “Flash In the Pan”. Besides security issues and crashing a lot, Flash is a headache for servicing and seems to be architecturally unsuited for lower-power environments.

Earlier this week, Brent Schlender published selected Steve Jobs quote highlights from his interview tape archives. Here’s one about us: The difference between the best worker on computer hardware and the average may be 2 to 1, if you’re lucky. With automobiles, maybe 2 to 1. But in software, it’s at least 25 to 1. The difference between the average programmer and a great one is at least that.
