AWS EC2 Virtualization 2017: Introducing Nitro

Brendan Gregg

Hardware virtualization for cloud computing has come a long way, improving performance using technologies such as VT-x, SR-IOV, VT-d, NVMe, and APICv. It's an exciting development in cloud computing: hardware virtualization is now fast. Virtualized in Hardware**: Hardware support for virtualization, and near bare-metal speeds.

Virtual consensus in Delos

The Morning Paper

Virtual consensus in Delos , Balakrishnan et al. Back in 2017 the engineering team at Facebook had a problem. If you think of this a bit like mapping memory addresses to data in memory, then another parallel comes to mind: the virtual address space. We propose the novel abstraction of a virtual shared log (or VirtualLog).

Investigation of a Workbench UI Latency Issue

The Netflix TechBlog

the ipykernel process) of the jupyter-lab server process , which means the main event loop being injected by pystan is that of the ipykernel process, not the jupyter-server process. Blame The Network The next theory was that the network between the web browser UI (on the laptop) and the JupyterLab server was slow.

USENIX LISA2021 Computing Performance: On the Horizon

Brendan Gregg

I summarized these topics and more as a plenary conference talk, including my own predictions (as a senior performance engineer) for the future of computing performance, with a focus on back-end servers. This was a chance to talk about other things I've been working on, such as the present and future of hardware performance.

Solaris to Linux Migration 2017

Brendan Gregg

I've suggested adding a command to docker to make listing at least the top-level PIDs in containers easier. ## Virtual Machines The two main technologies on Linux are Xen and KVM (and there's Bhyve for BSD). Oracle VM Server is based on Xen. What happens if processes really do try to populate all that virtual memory?

USENIX SREcon APAC 2022: Computing Performance: What's on the Horizon

Brendan Gregg

My personal opinion is that I don't see a widespread need for more capacity given horizontal scaling and servers that can already exceed 1 Tbyte of DRAM; bandwidth is also helpful, but I'd be concerned about the increased latency for adding a hop to more memory.
