The Speed of Time

Brendan Gregg

These strange questions came to the fore back in 2014 when Netflix was switching services from CentOS Linux to Ubuntu, and I helped debug several weird performance issues including one I'll describe here. Measuring the speed of time Is there already a microbenchmark for os::javaTimeMillis()? How long does it take to read the time?

The Performance Inequality Gap, 2021

Alex Russell

Devices and networks have evolved too: Alex Russell @slightlylate An update on mobile CPUs and the Performance Inequality Gap: Mid-tier Android devices (~$300) now get the single-core performance of a 2014 iPhone and the multi-core perf of a 2015 iPhone. Recall that single-core performance most directly translates into speed on the web.

AMD EPYC Processors in Azure Virtual Machines

SQL Performance

This processor has a base clock speed of 2.0GHz, with an all-core boost speed of 2.55GHz, and a max boost clock speed of 3.0GHz. I wrote about using CPU-Z to benchmark the Intel Xeon E5-2673 v3 processor in an Azure VM in this article. Figure 1: CPU-Z Benchmark Results for LS16v2. The L3 cache size is 64MB.

SQL Server 2016 – It Just Runs Faster: Always On Availability Groups Turbocharged

SQL Server According to Bob

Performance issues surrounding Availability Groups typically were related to disk I/O or network speeds. As we moved towards SQL Server 2014, the pace of hardware accelerated. We needed to start thinking about how fast can we replicate to a synchronous secondary replica in terms of % of the speed of a standalone workload.

Is Intel Doomed in the Server CPU Space?

SQL Performance

This situation was so bad that Microsoft offered a 25% discount on the cost of SQL Server processor core licenses for SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014, if you ran on qualifying AMD Opteron processors with six or more cores. I am optimistic that they will have higher single-threaded CPU performance than Intel Cascade Lake-SP processors.
