Because it’s based on RHEL CoreOS, OpenShift can also update the underlying operating system the nodes are running on.

We used this model effectively at Netflix when I was their cloud architect from 2010 through 2013. The next layer is operating system platforms, what flavor of Linux, what version of Windows etc. Mobile app platforms are much more standardized around iOS and Android, with Apple and Google providing the platform.

At its start in 2013, Docker was mainly used by developers as a sandbox for testing purposes. Kubernetes forged by the rise of Google. If there was any company positioned to understand the problems and limitations of containers before anyone else, it was Google. Google Cloud Kubernetes Engine (GKE). Red Hat OpenShift.

Feature phones all use proprietary and little known operating systems developed by the makers of the phones, as opposed to prevalent ones like Android or iOS. These are big numbers, and if considered part of the tablet market, since they are touch-first, mostly Android machines, Google would own over 70% of that.

Google has been working for quite some time to speed up its network protocols in order to minimize website response times. Google is hopeful that QUIC can reduce connection costs towards zero RTTs. From Google’s QUIC FAQ : Why can’t you just evolve and improve TCP under SPDY? QUIC has been in the making since 2013.
