Webpagetest.org is one of the premier page speed auditing services in the industry. With millions of consistent users, there was some concern within the industry that webpagetest.org might now become a paid service, or that it would no longer be opensource. Source: Catchpoint. It was a battle of not only proprietary vs opensource but also static vs dynamic. MovableType was one of the first static site generators on the market, although that term wouldn’t become popular until 2008. By the end of 2008, Tom Preston-Werner announces Jekyll — a simple, blog-aware, static site generator.
WebKit is an open-source web engine that allows Apple to enable improvements contributed by third parties. Apple's OpenSource Claim #. The opensource nature of WebKit is indisputable as a legal technicality. It's worth assessing these claims from most easily falsified to most contested.
Most notably, way back in 2008, Pat built a little open-source tooI called WebPageTest (now owned by Catchpoint) that has served as the biggest arrow in our collective web performance quiver for years. Pat has contributed so much to the web, and to web performance specifically.

In 2008 or so, when data scientist emerged as a job title, it was widely ridiculed as a nonjob: the thought that people who just worked with data could be scientists, or employ the rigors of their time-honored methods, was literally laughable in many circles. Improve time to market/speed of operations. Cross-sell more products.
