In part 3 I mentioned that I had developed some phone based apps while at eBay Research Labs in 2006, and I had also become involved in the Homebrew Mobile Phone Club , where a bunch of people got together in their spare time to try and build a phone that would be programmable by anyone. I published a paper and presentation in 2006 that discusses the complexities of measuring CPU utilization. The underlying data is available to the cloud vendors themselves, so they would need to supply a one minute, per instance, energy use value as an AWS CloudWatch metric or equivalent for other cloud providers.
