I was mostly coding in C, tuning FORTRAN, and when I needed to do a lot of data analysis of benchmark results used the S-PLUS statistics language, that is the predecessor to R. Rich became co-author of the second edition of the Sun Performance Tuning book, to describe how it worked. He hasn’t changed. that a lot of people used.

It uses a Solaris Porting Layer (SPL) to provide a Solaris-kernel interface on Linux, so that unmodified ZFS code can execute. There's also a ZFS send/recv code path that should try to use the TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE flag (as suggested by a coworker), to avoid a kernel hang (can't kill -9 the process). LTS (April 2016).
